Hillside Dog Park replicates poop composting program

Brooklyn Heights is a residential neighborhood within the New York City, borough of Brooklyn in the US. Users of the Hillside Dog Park in Brooklyn Heights are doing their part for the circular economy by upcycling dog poop on site into compost to help their trees thrive.

In May 2023, members of the Friends of Hillside Dog Park installed compost bins along with pooper scoopers and biodegradable brown paper. Scooped poop goes into a composting bin, gets mixed with sawdust, wood chips, or other carbon-filled material to cook for months. When ready, it will be collected and spread around street trees and garden beds.

East River State Park (now Marsha P Johnson Park) in Brooklyn inaugurated its composting pilot in 2016. It has since become a permanent program and Battery Park City, New York also operates a composting program.
