About the event

If you've done online research on composting pet poop, you've probably ended up with a crazy quilt of advice. Federal environmental agencies leave suggestions on household petwaste management to local authorities. Some municipalities give a thumbs up on composting this feedstock, even offering instructions and discounts on systems you can purchase. Others say, "double bag and toss it in the trash."

Who can blame local authorities for not encouraging pet waste in yard compost piles? Done incorrectly, it can have unhealthy results. But done right, will it produce finished compost that's safe and beneficial for plants?

EPWN has asked Rick Carr, farm manager and master composter at Rodale Institute, to review best pratices for composting pet waste and answer your questions.
